Welcome to our first post about our young Maori pharmacists of MPA

In this series we are going to highlight a few of our younger generators and let you know a little bit more about what they do at mahi and outside of mahi… and we start in Ōtaki with

Ronda Rousey aka Cassie Walker!

After mahi on training days you’ll find Cassie either down at the gym in Paraparaumu or at MMA Kapiti, training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the next competition coming up.

She’s off this weekend to compete in the Gi Nationals in Auckland and then has the Pan Pacifics in Melbourne next month!! Go hard Cassie!

During the day Cassie currently works at the Horowhenua Health Centre Pharmacy. Here’s a brief outline of what she does at mahi..

It’s a 20 minute drive to work and the day starts at 8.30.

We normally start by serving methadone to our methadone patients then we get right onto making up the previous day’s prescriptions and tying up loose ends.

I’m currently involved in an asthma project working to improve the health status of asthmatics in the area providing basic but crucial advice on asthma conditions and the medicines used.

I’m in charge of organising and dispensing the methadone and I make it up on a weekly basis. We are very much a retail pharmacy and in our pharmacy, our pharmacists spend a lot of time with our customers and in the shop so great customer service is really important to us and the personal satisfaction you get from providing such service is awesome!”
I finish up at 5.30, cruise home and if it’s training night I’m down the gym in Paraparaumu or at Oliver MMA Kapiti, training in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu.

I’ve just bought a house so weekends at the moment are spent tidying up a yard, cleaning the house, rearranging and buying furniture for myself and my boyfriend and enjoying our new rural-ish lifestyle in Ōtaki.

I get to travel around the country a bit and see friends all over the motu who I’ve known from high school and met through university and pharmacy.

Also enjoy traveling overseas and try to get somewhere every year. This year was Hawaii next year is South America.

So there it is whanau! Enjoy the life balance a career in pharmacy can provide! Get in contact with us to find out more about how you can get involved.
