IF you ever wondered what it was like working in a hospital pharmacy then here’s one great example…
After graduating with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from Otago University, Andy Davis worked in Palmerston North hospital as an intern and then as a pharmacist for a just over a year before moving to Wellington Hospital to take on a new position as acting team leader of the aseptic production unit.
Andy leads a team of pharmacists and technicians in making the hospital sterile & cytotoxic medicines. They make all their chemotherapy in house which is around 80 items a day, so a key part of Andy’s job is ensuring everything runs smoothly.
After a couple of years in Palmerston North Andy felt he needed a change, and a job within the aseptic production unit at Wellington Hospital arose.
He’s enjoying the management experience with this role, and has an interest in oncology/haematology although he hasn’t decided yet whether he’ll take the role on permanently or get back into a more clinical role.
Outside of pharmacy life Andy’s hoping to do a bit of travelling next year.
“Considering a Euro trip and ending back in the UK to see some friends in London. Also wanting to start the post grad certificate in pharmacy – so will have to take this into consideration when planning my adventures.”
When not working Andy enjoys the great food places, night life and culture in Wellington, and of course it’s also nice being closer to family.
Over the past year he’s also been getting into running which he finds a great way to de-stress and stay fit.
“My goal is to do a half marathon in the new year, which seems realistic!”
